What is the Meaningful Measurement inquiry?

Led by the Old Fire Station, the Meaningful Measurement Inquiry works with partners across the city to experiment with different approaches to measurement. We’re interested in learning through doing – finding out what works, what needs to shift in order for us to measure meaningfully, and how we use the collective momentum across Oxford and beyond to make this happen.

Why are we preoccupied with measurement?

Like many others, we struggle with measurement. We’re frustrated with the gap between genuine learning and how we measure impact. We’re tired of feeling pressured to overclaim and enter numbers into forms we don’t believe tell us anything of value.

We know that measurement matters – it shapes what we prioritise, how we learn, how we share power and whose voices are at the centre.

If the measures are not human friendly, then the service won’t be either.

Join us!

We continue to bring partners together to experiment, learn and take action around meaningful measurement.

If you’re interested in being involved or finding out more, we’d love to hear from you.

Lucy reads out her poem, "What It's Like To Be Measured", to an audience during Marmalade Festival 2023. This session was called Meaningful Measurement: What We've Learned A Year On.

What’s the big deal?

What needs to change?

What can we do?

How do we learn from others?

What have we learned needs to change… How do we make it happen?
